The Most Exotic Coffee In The World
By now you are most likely familiar with one of the most expensive coffees in the world, Kopi Luwak. For the sake of those that are not aware of this decadent coffee, here is a brief synopsis. Kopi Luwak is a coffee from Indonesia that has been eaten and then excreted in feces by an animal known as a Luwak, for short. The Luwak eats the coffee cherries off the trees and it's digestive system breaks down the skin and pulp and the animal excretes what's known as the parchment. Each parchment, the protective shell of the coffee, has one bean inside of it and each coffee cherry usually contains 2 beans, each with their own parchment. The animal essentially replaces one of the most important steps in the processing of every coffee, and this unique step is said to impart very distinct characteristics in the cup profile, as one might likely assume.
It is important to realize Kopi Luwak has been around for many years, however it was considered an urban legend of sorts by many within the specialty coffee industry. Over the last 20 years, we at Coffee and Tea Limited have periodically obtained small amounts of this particular coffee but never in any significant quantity. Up until 2004, there simply was never much of a demand for it. Around that time we decided to purchase larger quantities of Kopi Luwak and have been custom brewing it at both our locations ever since. All our Kopi Luwak is authentic and is not blended with any other coffees or substances. There seems to be a lot of Kopi Luwak available now online from various sources, so be cautious when purchasing this coffee as it may not be real Kopi Luwak.
Recently, with the increase of high priced coffees available through specialty coffee auctions Kopi Luwak may not be the most expensive anymore but it is certainly exotic. If you haven't already, we certainly encourage you to experience this unique coffee.
